We know you have questions before trying something new. Here's everything you need to know about fresh, roast-to-order medium roast coffee.
Medium Roast Coffee
You can order fresh medium roast coffee right here at 40 Thieves Coffee. Unlike grocery stores where beans sit for weeks or months, we roast your order within 24 hours and ship it fresh to your door.
Every bag is custom roasted when you order, not pulled from a warehouse shelf. This means you get coffee at its peak flavor, not after it's already gone stale. Learn more about what makes our medium roast special.
The best medium roast coffee is freshly roasted, ethically sourced, and roasted in small batches. Freshness matters more than anything; coffee loses up to 60% of its flavor within two weeks of roasting.
At 40 Thieves, our medium roast coffee is specialty-grade, meaning it scores 80+ points on professional cupping scales. We source directly from farmers who use sustainable practices, then roast to order so you taste the difference. Discover why specialty coffee matters.
Medium roast coffee is versatile and works with almost any brewing method. Use a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio (about 2 tablespoons per 6 oz water), water heated to 195-205°F, and brew for 4-5 minutes.
The grind size matters too, medium grind for drip coffee makers, coarse for French press, and fine for espresso. Fresh beans make the biggest difference, though. Stale coffee tastes flat no matter how well you brew it. Read our complete medium roast brewing guide.
Medium roast coffee offers balanced sweetness with notes of caramel, chocolate, and nuts. It's not as acidic as light roast or as bitter as dark roast; it's the sweet spot that most people love.
Fresh medium roast has bright, clean flavors with a smooth finish. You'll taste the origin characteristics (like fruity Ethiopian notes or chocolatey Colombian flavors) without overwhelming roast bitterness. This balance makes medium roast perfect for daily drinking.
Medium roast works beautifully with drip coffee makers, pour-over (like Chemex or V60), French press, and espresso machines. Its balanced profile adapts to different brewing styles without becoming too acidic or too bitter.
For drip and pour-over, use a medium grind. For French press, go coarser. For espresso, grind fine. Learn more about grind sizes and brewing methods.
Medium roast balances the bright acidity of light roast with the body of dark roast. Light roast preserves more origin flavors and caffeine but can taste sour if over-extracted. Dark roast has bold, smoky notes but can taste burnt or bitter.
Medium roast gives you caramelized sweetness without sacrificing the bean's natural characteristics. It's the most popular roast level because it pleases the widest range of coffee drinkers. Read our complete roast level comparison.
Grind size depends on your brewing method: espresso (fine), drip coffee (medium), French press (coarse). We offer custom grinding for your specific needs. Check our complete grind guide for detailed recommendations.
